Red vs. Blue

Check it out at redvsblue.com. It’s pretty funny stuff. I recommend checking out the archives secti0n and watching an episode or two. My fav so far is episode 8.

City of Heroes

Hey guys… sorry haven’t posted in a long, long time. I’ve been playing City of Heroes pretty extensively for the past week and a half. Before that Robin and I went to CA for 10 days to visit parents and other relatives…

How’s it going all?

CoH is amazingly addicting. Very simple gameplay with hardly any down-time. Very different than any other MMOG I’ve played.

Spidey 2 was great.

Fahrenheit 9/11 makes one wonder what the fuck is wrong with this country and why the hell one isn’t doing anything about it instead of holing away playing a game for hours and hours. But like I said, addicting… Seriously, though, I think everyone in this country should watch the two movies Bowling for Columbine and Fahrenheit 9/11. It might help us understand ourselves.

Ikea

Hey guys,

So Yeung and I are going through the process of getting some new furniture for the apartment. I wanted to know if any of you have experience getting furniture shipped from Ikea (Melhus, I am looking in your direction). How were the rates? Was everything shipped unassembled (that’s what I am hoping, otherwise it won’t be worth it to pay for shipping)? How long did things take?

We’re debating between Ikea and buying stuff at brick-and-mortar stores locally. We would like to go with Ikea, because their stuff is nice, a little cheaper, and I just like the company more. Anyway, let me know any experiences you all have had.

Friends and Dating

Hey fellas. Looks like my sailing trip will be delayed for a few weeks. Hans and Romi, the guys I’m going to be sailing with, took the boat 20 miles out into the ocean and met with a storm. The main sails were ripped so they are working on getting a new one. Plus Hans has to take time and figure out some things with his mom since his dad just passed away. Hans owns the boat.

By the way, I’m in a bit of a pickle. Do any of you have experience with dating a good friend’s ex? So here’s the situation. He gave the green light before her and I were interested, switched to a red after we got interested (the bugger) and is currently chewing (or choking) on yellow after talking to me. All three of us are good friends and will remain good friends. I’m talking about Johnny and Claire.

Life

Hey guys…just wanted to let you all know that Diana and I are engaged. We got engaged on the 22nd of May. We haven’t decided on a wedding day yet. I’m anticipating that it will be in a year or 2..if not longer. Cheers!

New Hot Pot City in Portland!

Hey,
Some guy emailed me today saying that he read what I wrote about me and Scott going down to San Jose for the Game Developer’s Conference back in 2003. Er, at least I assume that is what he was referring to. (I love how people email you saying I read what you wrote on the web, but don’t tell you the URL they were reading…) Anyway, I lamented the fact that there was no hot pot place in Portland. Well, this guy tells me that now there is. Check it out at http://www.hotpotpdx.com/! Too bad I live in Seattle now…

Boston Pops

So two days ago Yeung and I had tickets to see the Boston Pops. For those who don’t know, it’s the Boston Symphony Orchestra performing more modern music (like jazz, etc., not like 50 Cent…). She got the tickets as an anniversary present and the show we got had John Williams (see: Star Wars, ET, Jaws, Indiana Jones, etc.) as a guest conductor. The first thing that happened as we walked from the lot where we parked to the Symphony Hall was that John Williams is getting out of his car like ten feet from us. So I persuade Yeung to get an autograph (a few people were asking already, so I didn’t feel too much like a slut)… I don’t have an online version of the photo, only one on my PC. I can’t recall right now how best to put it on here, but I will later. Anyway, the show was super fun. The whole theme was music from movies. He started with some older movies (like Citizen Kane) and also played some stuff he recently did for the Harry Potter movies. The second segment featured various stuff, mostly composed by him, including Schindler’s List and Scent of a Woman. The last segment was probably the best. He played a tribute to Henry Mancini, and played a lot of his most famous stuff, including “the Pink Panther”, “Peter Gunn” (forever known to me as the theme from the video game Spy Hunter), “The Days of Wine and Roses”. He also played “Moon River”, which was amazing (I’m sure Chris would have appreciated it).

One funny thing was that we were sitting right in the very front row of tables, so we were chatting with one of the bass players, and he gave us a copy of his schedule, which also had the encores they had decided to play: the “Raiders of the Lost Ark” march and “E.T.”. So we were totally pulling hard to get them to play those, which of course they did (how could he not play “Raiders”?). The bass player we were talking to had a fedora hidden behind his gear and he whipped it out when they eventually played it, and JW was laughing when he saw it (the whole time, still conducting the song).

Anyhow, the thing I can’t really describe was the quality of the orchestra. I mean, all of them are total pros. They are casual, but you can tell they are all superstars in whatever they play. My ears haven’t had a lot of training to pick up the finer points in this type of situation, but the entire group is basically perfectly in step with each other and with the conductor. Definitely something I plan on seeing again when I get a chance.

update

Hey all, so I just got word a week ago that I was going to be invited to give a talk at the IPFA conference in Taiwan in July! Our paper was awarded “Most Outstanding Paper” (which is actually the SECOND best paper of the conference, not the “best paper”) at the ISTFA meeting we went to last November. Apparently the two conferences have an exchange where the best paper from one goes to the other and gives the same talk. Luckily for us, the “best paper” couldn’t go, so they invited me. Best thing is, I just heard yesterday that the travel and hotel is all totally taken care of. Yee-haw! So I am pretty stoked. The conference is from July 5-8th. Does anyone know anything about what to see in Taiwan? I thought I would ask, though I am pretty sure Mark and George don’t have any connections there. And Chris, well, yeah.

Now I have to convince the state of California to please please please give me my damn birth certificate so I can get my passport! I submitted the forms in December and no response yet! WTF?
